Peggy Carter is the bravest and strongest-willed woman of her time, a dedicated soldier who chose to embrace the values of the free world and literally wear them as her uniform. On that world, the war was lost, a tale that inspired the other Captain America to fight even harder for the values she represented. Much to Earth-86315 Carter’s shock, however, this variant had been captured by Baron Zemo during the war, and the experiments the cruel but brilliant scientist performed on her allowed the Third Reich to develop their own version of the Super-Soldier Serum, making Nazi Germany the main military power on the planet. On Earth-61351, Peggy Carter became Captain America as well, following pretty much the same path of her doppelganger. If this version of Captain America saw victory, however, another variant very similar to her wasn’t as lucky.
Her mission complete, Captain America joined the Exiles, ready to commit herself to a much, much bigger war. Since saving the universe implied saving Europe, however, the two groups formed a situational alliance, and fought side by side, leading to the Red Skull’s final and utter defeat. As soon as she assessed that the Exiles were not Nazi spies, Captain America listened to what they had to say about their mission, learning of both the threat of the Time-Eater and of Tribunal of Watchers on their trails, but she had her own mission to think about, and cosmic-scaled threats seemed very far away. They were the Exiles, a reality-jumping group led by Blink, and they were pursuing their own mission. The war was a desperate and complicated situation enough as it was, but it became even worse when, on their way to their final confrontation with the Red Skull, Captain America, Becky and the Howling Commandos stumbled upon a weird group, composed of people with never before seen uniforms, and some of them didn’t even look human. Of course, she even gained a nemesis, namely the Red Skull, the ruthless head of the Nazi scientific division known as Hydra, who was her only match on the battlefield. With time, Captain America became a living legend, and she even got her own sidekick, an enthusiast and patriotic young woman named Becky Barnes. She became the champion of the Allies, a living symbol of freedom and equality: she shipped to Europe, where she led the Howling Commandos in many successful missions, showing the Axis that they had better not underestimated her just because she was a woman. She was also christened Captain America as part of the official propaganda: she didn’t like it a bit at first, but later, as she lived in New York City and fell in love with the city and its way of living, she accepted the moniker in full, along with what it represented.
Eventually Peggy accepted the offer, and she became the one and only Super-Soldier of her world. An American scientist, Howard Stark, had learnt enough from Erskine to activate the process himself, albeit not to replicate it, and he was sure that Peggy was the perfect candidate to replace Rogers. Abraham Erskine was about to subject his candidate, scrawny but noble-hearted recruit Steve Rogers, to the process that would have turned him into the perfect human being, a Nazi spy who had infiltrated the base shot and killed both the scientist and the young soldier. Here, she was involved in Project: Rebirth, aimed at creating a Super-Soldier that could be the spearhead of an army to send against the Axis, but something went terribly wrong. Rather than joining the French Resistance to battle the Third Reich like her counterpart did, this Peggy joined the intelligence, and she shipped to the United States to better be of aid. She was born in England rather than in Virginia, and when World War II erupted, she was in Europe to see it happen. On Earth-86315, things for Peggy Carter were different than her Earth-616 counterpart since the very beginning. Also in the comics there are at least two variants of Peggy who become Super-Soldiers instead of Steve Rogers, but choose to adopt the name Captain America rather than Captain Carter. This is not the same Carter we saw in the animated series, but of course they share many similarities.
On Earth-838, this variant of Peggy Carter is the First Avenger and a member of the Illuminati, along with Master Mordo, Professor X, Black Bolt, Captain Marvel and Mr. Spoilers alert! The last character from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (at least for now, after a first vision) is one we already knew from What If…?, but who makes here her live action debut: Captain Carter, portrayed by Hayley Atwell.
